According to the 2000 Census the majority of the residents work in the management/professional  or sales/office occupations fields.  Production, transportation, and material moving occupations is another sector that employs a large percentage of the population.  The majority of the county workers are private wage and salary workers with approximately one forth of  the working population employed by he government, self-employed, or unemployed.

The average annual employment in Raleigh County in 2000 was $29,888.  These jobs brought in a total annual wage amount of $769 million to the county.  In 2000 the average annual wage for workers was $25,740 and the average weekly wage was $495.

Income 

In 2001 Raleigh County had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $23,220.  This PCPI ranked 11 th in the state and was 76 percent of the national average of $30,413. The 2001 PCPI reflected an increase of 8.1 percent from 2000.  In 1991 tech PCPI of Raleigh County was $15,166 and ranked 15 th in the state.

Earnings of persons employed in Raleigh County increased from approximately $1 billion in 2000 to approximately $1.15 billion in 2001, an increase of  9.3 percent.
